Action scenes are all about control and safety. No matter how risky the stunts are shown in it, people like T.J. White of the T-Minus Productions are always the ones behind the curtain trying to make sure everything stays in control and safety.
There is a general misconception about the stunt coordinators. They are always thought to design and coordinate action clips that are wild in nature. However, what people forget is that even in simple scenes like those described below, things can go utterly wrong to the extent where the life of people involved can come under threat.
California Lottery is known to everyone. As every business do, they also have their adverts. We have two of the commercials that we are going to peak into.
Let’s start with the credits. The commercial has been directed by Rich Lee and produced by Michael Angelos at the Native Content. The stunt coordination is done by us, by the way.
In the video, the commander of a seemingly waiting force is seen on a horse, while the others are holding spears and shields.
You might ask here: “What could go wrong, here?”
Well, there’s where the misconception lies. Any mishap could happen. The horse could go bonkers, and with a reverse kick, it could blow off the life of any of the scantily dressed soldiers standing behind. Or, by carelessness, one of the spears could harm the horse. Of course, these are just speculations. Reality could be worse than it.
This is another commercial that has been stunt rigged by us.
It has been produced by Arthur Gorson and directed by Alejandro Toledo at the Harpoon Pictures. Unlike the one talked about above, this one has a more abstract approach to the CA Lottery’s Black Premium Lottery.
When a commercial like this one is to be brought forth, the responsibilities of a stunt coordinator in no terms diminish. The approach we talked about is shown in the video as a floating catamaran and a dive into the water.
Here too, it is easy to say that there isn’t much risk involved. However, when we look closely at the matters, even a single wrong move could harm the actor in the commercial.
But thanks to the knowledge of the stunt coordination and rigging that we have accumulated so far and with the input of sufficient amount of experience of T.J., the commercials were shot without any damage.
How was that possible?
It was made possible by designing, supervising, and helping the director shoot the scenes in an environment made safe by the usage of different rigging equipment.
And that is precisely what a stunt coordinator does.
As you have seen in the above two commercials, and we’d reinstate that here, a stunt whether small or huge is something that involves danger. This has been beautifully put by Buddy Van Horn, the Clint Eastwood stunt double as:
“There is an element of surprise in every stunt.”
Each stunt counts. And without the proper utilization of the safety measures by a stunts coordinator like T.J. White, things could massively go wrong.
The best water movies are films that involve water as a major thematic element. Typically set on a major body of water, such as an ocean, river, lake, pond or creek, these compelling and entertaining stories that just happen to take place or involve water.
Water Stunts are probably one of the most difficult to coordinate and control. To the average viewer, they have no idea of the highest concept of complexity involved in stunts requiring any aquatic motorized vehicle. First and most important, there are NO brakes. So the individual that is piloting the vessel must understand completely the speed, angle, and ability of the craft.

Stunts in commercials have been making products, companies, and businesses look exciting and bold. Adding such elements as bungee jumping (Bud Light), girls fighting in a water fountain (Go Daddy), high speed car/motorcycle maneuvers, drifting, even jumping over things (Fiat, NASCAR, Chevy), or a Sasquatch who gets picked on (Jack Links Beef Jerky). Commercial stunts can be as minimal as riding a motorcycle into a Progressive ad to as big as doing a barrel roll in a Chevy Sonic for a Super Bowl Commercial.
Mountain Dew was one of the biggest Ad campaigns using exciting stunts to gain interest in their product. Even Channing Tatum did a spot where he was in a Trans Am, does a barrel roll and grabs a Mountain Dew out of an unsuspecting patron’s hand outside of a convenience store. Another great ad is for NASCAR, coordinated by TJ White, which shows being a FAN is fanatical, the precision driving and overall action made viewers notice how intense the sport of NASCAR can be.
Let’s not forget probably the most recent string of amazing commercials for Allstate Insurance, MAYHEM. The use of actor Dean Winters, (OZ, Rescue Me, 30 Rock), has shown just how much you need to buy insurance. The stunt coordinator, Rene Mousseux, and rigging team have made that series of commercials unforgettable. High falls, car stunts, pyrotechnics, and most of all… Safety, make those commercials successful and entertaining.
The biggest stage for any commercial is the Super Bowl, when companies pay up to $3.5million for a 30sec spot. Even non-sports viewers will dial in to watch just the commercials.
